First British Society for Dermatopathology Self Assessment Half Day

Jurys Inn Hotel, Liverpool

Monday, 8th July 2013

Please click the following link in order to view the self assessment cases:

http://www.virtualpathology.leeds.ac.uk/eqa/bsd_sa.php

Each virtual slide image can be seen either by clicking “open with WebScope” or “open with ImageScope”. Although WebScope provides satisfactory images, ImageScope is better but requires downloading the free Aperio software on to your computer – try clicking on open with ImageScope and fill in the brief Aperio form if you do not have the software already installed. For those using NHS or other networked computers, you may need to contact your IT department to permit downloading of the program and then they may need to make sure the sis files are opened by default with the scanscope program within imagescope.

You will find that many of the cases are not orientated correctly (we are trying to resolve this – it is due to variable section placement by lab staff). If you are using ImageScope to view the virtual slides it is very easy to rotate the image to the required orientation.
Having opened the image, in the tool bar (top left) select the "Image" button and then "Rotate Image".
This activates a tool box which allows you to rotate the image as required

This is the afternoon before the Annual Meeting of the BSD at the 93rd Annual Meeting of the British Association of Dermatologists (BAD) at the adjacent ACC Liverpool.

The Self Assessment is a stand alone meeting and if also attending the main BAD conference both can be booked from the same registration form which is available below

Please click here for the BSD self assessment registration form

Please click here for the BAD registration form

The Self Assessment registration is found on page 3 of the registration form under “Pre-conference sessions” and does not require sponsorship by a BAD member.

Most pathologists and dermatologists attending the BAD conference on the Tuesday attend for the whole day so non-BAD members pay a Day Delegate Non-Member rate of £150 which includes the BSD meeting (although it can also be booked separately). This requires non-member sponsorship with a signature by a BAD member on the registration form; most dermatologists are happy to sponsor.

This is a whole day with an emphasis on dermatopathology and is good opportunity for pathologists to see their subject in a more clinically orientated environment.

The Clinicopathological cases take place throughout the morning with the Neil Smith lecture for the BSD to be given at lunchtime followed by the BSD AGM and BSD guest lecture.

This year we are lucky to have Prof Wolter Mooi giving the Neil Smith lecture and the BSD guest lecture.

Annual Trainees’ Workshop

Thursday 12th September 2013 in Bristol

Dear Trainee,

We would like to invite Specialist Trainees in Dermatology and Histopathology to the 5th British Society for Dermatopathology (BSD) Annual Trainees’ Workshop on Thursday 12th September 2013 in Bristol, sponsored by Dermal.

It will be suitable for both trainees sitting the Specialty Certificate Examination in Dermatology and the FRCPath parts 1 and 2.

This year the themes will be Melanocytic lesions and Granulomatous and necrobiotic disorders.

The day has an interactive format, viewing histology slides on microscopes, supervised by dermatopathologists, followed by case-based teaching from national and local experts.

Cases will be of varying difficulty from beginner to expert level. Beginners will maximise the day’s educational value if they read a basic dermatopathology textbook and make a prior attempt to see routine cases with their local histopathologists.

There will also be self-assessment cases for more advanced trainees.

The meeting will commence at 9.00am (provisional program below). The venue is Medical Sciences Teaching Laboratories, University of Bristol (see below for link).

Places are limited to 40, allocated by first applications received with payment. Successful applicants will be notified by email that they have secured a place. Lunch and tea and coffee are included.

The cost is only £25.00 for BSD members and £50.00 for non-BSD members, payable by cheque to the “British Society for Dermatopathology”. Anyone applying for BSD membership (£15 per annum) can avail of the reduced registration rate for the meeting.  BSD Membership forms are downloadable from the BSD website – see the 'membership' link on the left - and can be brought on the day.

Please send any correspondence to Dr Paul Craig paul.craig@glos.nhs.uk

We look forward to seeing you on the day

The Roxburghe Hotel, Edinburgh, Scotland

This year's invited guest speakers include:

Klaus Busam (New York, NY)

Richard Scolyer (Sydney, Australila)

Eduardo Calonje (London, England)

The Edinburgh Dermatopathology Tutorial is an annual course designed to provide a practical approach to different topics in Dermatopathology, delivered by extensive self study of a large and varied selection of cases using virtual glass slides. This year’s course aims to increase awareness of the vast spectrum of cutaneous melanocytic tumours. Attendees will be invited to view 60 challenging and instructive cases ahead of the meeting using scanned virtual slides made available through a web server. These cases will be discussed at the course by our group of internationally renowned tutors. Discussion will be based around the individual diagnosis placed in the broader context of differential diagnosis. In a relaxed atmosphere participants will be encouraged to participate in the discussion and suggest possible diagnoses. To facilitate the discussion, tutors will provide an overview of the wide spectrum of melanocytic tumours with emphasis on recent diagnostic advances. Electronic copies of all case discussions and lectures will be made available after the course. The course is suited to Pathologists with an interest in Dermatopathology as well as practising Dermatopathologists and Dermatologists and Pathologists in training preparing for the British Diploma, the International Board Certification and/or the American Board examination in Dermatopathology
